New antibiotics from Tangkuban Perahu

The diversity of nature in Indonesia need not doubt. Indonesia has counted 147 volcanoes scattered across the island. In West Java alone registered 17 volcanoes, including Mount Tangkuban Perahu, Bandung Institute of technology researcher where and LIPI performs identification and screening against the 5 (five) of the microorganism that comes from the volcanic soil samples . Not many people in Bandung who may know, even most people in Indonesia in General might not think that there are microbes that live in the soil contains sulfur and also has potential as an antibiotic agent. The volcanic soil is a potential source of raw material for the manufacture of drugs that come from nature. Antibiotics are a result of secondary metabolites, namely the components produced by the organism (e.g. certain amino acids, fatty acids, higher terpenes etc.), which works to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses that infect and pathogens. In Indonesia itself a case of death due to antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial, reaches 700,000 per year on January 2014, in the development and spread of infection is continuing and has yet to be addressed properly, it is estimated in 2050 future mortality this resistance can be up to 10 million people. Therefore, one of the efforts by finding new sources of antibiotics with more effective antimicrobial activity is considered appropriate at this time.



Researchers from the Institut Teknologi Bandung and LIPI successfully perform stage isolation, identification and screening against the 5 (five) of the microorganism a soil sample obtained from the volcanoes Tangkuban Perahu to explore further the potential microorganisms as agents of antibiotics over the rising incidence of resistance to antibiotics. Microorganisms that successfully identified three strains of Actinomycetes and 2 strains of fungi, where both the strain known as the source of a variety of secondary metabolites that are useful to overcome infections in humans. 

Actinomycetes is a group of Gram-positive bacteria that are commonly found in soil and most of the group is producing a variety of antibiotics and other antimicrobial components. While the group is talofita, Fungi, in which structure was not made up of roots, stems or leaves, known as mushrooms. Some types of fungi produce antibiotics that are already commonly known, such as penicillin. Various antimicrobial components that can be generated from these two groups make discovery against a specific strain became interesting things to look for to know more deeply.

After learning the taxonomy, morphology and physiology of the strain was isolated, the researchers then perform a test fermentation and bioaktivitas against isolates strains. Test results against the 5th bioaktivitas strains showed that all isolates producing antibiotic activity. Bioaktivitas, test and test the resistance of pathogens bacteria obtained at the highest strains of Streptomyces galbus as unidentified. In addition, the test on the fermentation broth of Streptomyces galbus strain getting test results with the lowest availability of T47D cells. Streptomyces galbus has anticancer potential. According to the researchers, the findings of a potential new antibiotic will be more promising in isolation and screening actinomycetes and fungi was performed on a variety of other sources of volcanic soils are rated have the potential existence of these two groups. Further, the results of the study also showed that both strains of the group can be useful for a variety of applications, both for controlling infectious diseases infectious to the potential for the discovery of new drugs.

As part of the community, we can take on the role as well as in efforts tackling antimicrobial resistance through small steps, such as spending the appropriate advice given antibiotics your doctor and do not consume antibiotics in excess , much less urgent to be given antibiotics when it hurts when it’s not needed.
