Meet the First Nobel Prize Winner in Science (Physics) from Asia

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Since the Nobel Prize was awarded from 1901 [1], the first Asian person first gained a Nobel Prize in Science in 1930 (29 years later). And that is quite impressive, the Asian just received the Nobel Prize alone [2].

It is CV Raman (full name Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman), an Indian national who won the first Nobel Prize in Science in Asia (Physics). In addition to the first time in Asia, Raman was also the first non-white person to gain a Nobel Prize in science [3].

CV Raman, First Nobel Prize in Science (Physics) in Asia

His most important discovery was published in a scientific paper entitled ” A New Radiation ” in 1928 [4]. Currently, scientists recognize the new radiation as Raman scattering or Raman effect (Raman Effect).

The finding is very important because it is able to prove the quantum nature of light. Applications of the invention are very wide, one of which is the most important Raman Spectroscopy . The other applications are Raman lidar, Stimulated Raman transition, Raman amplification , etc.

Raman Spectroscopy is used to detect and classify the chemical composition of any phased sample (solid, liquid, gas) in a non-destructive manner [5].

Thanks to its very important discoveries, in 1998 the Raman Effect was also designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The award is a prestigious award given annually by the ACS in order to celebrate ” Chemists and Chemistry that Transformed Our Lives ” and fulfill their vision of ” Improving people’s kam- ing througt the transforming power of chemistry ” [6].

Back to the nobel prize, the interesting thing about Raman is that he is so confident that his findings are capable of winning the Nobel Prize.

In 1930, Raman even purchased a ticket in July to leave Sweden in the hope of being called as a nobel recipient. Though the new nobel prize announced in November. In that wait, everyday Raman reads the newspaper, searches for information about the Nobel laureate and discards the paper if there is no info about the Nobel laureate [7]. And it turns out his hopes were achieved, in November the nobel committee announced that he was the sole winner of the Nobel Prize [2].

Due to the enormous and important role of Raman in the world of science. Every February 28, India celebrates National Science Day. February 28 is the day when Raman first observes ” A new radiation “.

What about our beloved country, Indonesia?

The Indonesians up to this article were made still no one has won the nobel prize [8].

Through Warung Sains Teknologi, the author hopes that the website and social media warstek can inspire Indonesian youth and ladies to be serious in deepening Science and Technology. The goal of course in order to work for the welfare of the nation and the world. Please follow instagram account (link), fanpage facebook (link), line official (link), telegram (link), and YouTube Wastek (link).

However, do not make nobel prizes a goal. What should be our goal is to work that can provide the maximum benefit and the widest possible to mankind. Once the benefits are felt, then the various awards will come as bonuses, including the Nobel Prize.
